My father was a military man and he instilled in me a special respect for these people from childhood. I was not in the army. But I felt indebted to those who stood in defense of our life and freedom. Meanwhile, the problem of rehabilitation of veterans became more and more urgent.
I have made a public commitment to teach a small group of people the skills they need to start their IT careers, and to do everything I can to help them get jobs.Free of charge and without any obligation to me.
And the puzzle took shape: Vyacheslav Melnyk, at that time - Head of Rivne IT Cluster, introduced me to the right person - Andrii Burachyk, Director of the regional hospital for war veterans. We found a common language immediately and got down to business: we conducted an information campaign among patients and gathered all those interested for the first meeting. It was difficult to prove the seriousness of intentions and achieve their trust. Therefore, I announced that everyone who comes to the first class will receive a laptop as a gift. With my own money and with the help of friends, I managed to buy laptops and everything necessary.
Armed with a good mood and self-confidence, I packed a small hatchback to the ceiling with pizza and laptops and set off for my first class in Klevan. It was not easy in every way. But I was happy and felt that I was doing right things.Half a year has passed since then. There are four people left. Each of them has chosen their future direction and is on the finish line to their first job in IT.
I thank everyone who supported me.Huge thanks to English language teachers who responded to my public request and help boys on a volunteer basis. Thanks friends and colleagues. Thanks Rivne IT Cluster, which fulfilled its function as effectively as possible.Thank you Andrii Ivanovich Burachyk and the hospital team - you are doing a great job. Thanks to everyone who cares. We are doing a good thing.Together - we'll do more!

About the Project

The project started as the personal initiative of Alex Stasuk. In partnership with the "Rivne Regional Hospital for War Veterans", an informational campaign was conducted among the patients. With the participation of the hospital's staff psychologist, 12 participants were selected, each of whom received the necessary equipment. The first session took place on August 20th in one of the hospital's premises. Flexible approaches were applied during the training: a friendly atmosphere, informal communication, pizza, and walks.
Training was conducted weekly on Sundays, in a blended mode: offline for hospital patients and online for those outside its premises. Necessary theoretical materials and practical tasks were provided for participants to work on independently at their convenience during the week. The mentor provided assistance and checked the completed practical tasks online.
By the end of the basic course, the number of participants decreased to 4 individuals. Each of the participants chose their further development path: three - Software Engineers (two - Front-End and one - Backend), and one - DevOps. As of today, each participant is working with a professional mentor. Individual internship and employment programs are being developed.

In a country where up to 5 million veterans and their families are expected, tackling veterans' affairs is always about the fear of making just a "drop in the ocean." Therefore, many initiatives to support veterans - both governmental and public - limit their activities until there are "enough" veterans for large-scale projects and products.
Fortunately, there are brave entities like xWarriors, who do not wait for millions but already help dozens today, because every veteran is invaluable.
Another superpower of xWarriors is their non-utilitarian approach. Investing in a person who is reinventing themselves after injury means not knowing for sure if even one will reach the endpoint of employment. What kind of KPIs can there be? But that's no reason not to start! It's important that veterans, even those who choose not to pursue education, see a society that is ready to support them.

How It Works

We offer basic IT course that takes 3 months, which includes the necessary minimum knowledge to start working in Customer/Technical Support in most companies. Each participant gets an English teacher, with whom they work online twice a week throughout the entire period, until employment. An important element of preparation is professional orientation with the involvement of HR specialists. This allows participants to see wider picture and better understand the specifics of various professions in IT. Thus, each participant has the opportunity to choose their further development direction by selecting one of the available specializations: DevOps, Front-end Software Development, Project Management, Technical Support. This stage takes from 3 to 6 months, depending on the chosen direction. We base our curriculum on professional courses from Google/Meta/IBM on the Coursera platform. Additionally, each participant receives an individual experienced industry mentor (Senior level) who develops a personalized study plan, conducts regular meetings, and provides additional theoretical materials and practical tasks.
